Chapter 9

The phone rang. Marsha picked up and answered. “Black Management Group how may I help you? Hold please.” She pressed one button and then another. “Mr. Brooks I have Mr. Williams on hold for you.” “Ok, put him through.” Marcus answered while pulling a folder from his file cabinet. Mr. Williams was the father of Georgetown basketball star Chris Williams. Marcus was recommended to Mr. Williams by Georgetown’s coach to be his agent. Mr. Williams, Chris and Marcus had met on several occasions. Chris was impressed with Marcus’ knowledge and down to earth attitude. They had developed a trust. But both Chris and his father had wrestled with the idea of hiring Marcus to be Chris’ agent or to go with someone more experienced and known. Chris had been approached by many agents long before he graduated with promises of money, cars and women. Under Mr. Williams’ watchful eye they had narrowed the choice down to a few. Georgetown’s coach was highly thought of by Chris and his father and his recommendation of Marcus weighed heavily. Today would be the day to choose. Contract negotiations would begin soon and Chris did not have an agent yet. Up to now his father was handling matters. “Mr. Williams, how are you?” “Fine sir, how are you?” “Things are going well; how is Chris?” “Chris is doing fine although he’s getting a little anxious with the season approaching and all.” “That’s understandable; have you come to a decision?” Marcus asked getting straight to the point. “Mr. Brooks you know something, I didn’t raise my son the way I have all these years just to turn him over to some white folks when he is about to make some money. I have a good feeling about you and so does Chris. We need to start trusting our own you know what I mean. I mean we trusted them all these years and most of these guys retire unprepared and broke. Mr. Brooks, don’t disappoint us.” “I’m glad you have a good feeling about me, that’s important and I will not disappoint you. We are going to make Chris very rich. We are going to set him up for life I assure you. Every move I make I will explain to both you and Chris. We’ll make a good team. We are going to set a good example for others. I thank you for trusting me. Now, we have got to get down to business. First the three of us need to meet, then we‘ll talk with the team. How’s your schedule this evening?” “This evening is fine.” “Good, I’ll pick you guys up at six and then we’ll eat and talk at my place. Is that ok?” “That’s fine sir.” “And please call me Marcus from now on ok?” “Ok Marcus I’ll see you at six.” “Six it is. Good bye.” Marcus hung up and then called Lisa to let her know they were expecting company later. After speaking with Lisa he called his Secretary.
